Why are there black sidebars on some of my HD channels?
Most TV screens and programming were designed using a 4:3 aspect ratio for standard-definition TV reception and viewing. However, most HDTVs are "widescreen", which use an aspect ration of 16:9. Therefore, when a standard-definition program is viewed on a widescreen HDTV, the HDTV may center the image on the screen with black or gray margins (known as sidebars) on either side in order to retain the 4:3 aspect ratio. The cable box uses this same process when 4:3 content is viewed on the high-definition, 16:9 wide-screen HDTV.

How do I see an instant replay with my DVR?
To see an 8 second instant replay of the program you are viewing with your COX DVR, simply hit the replay button.

What is the difference between regular cable and digital cable?
The difference between analog video and digital video is the way the signals are transmitted. The video signal of analog TV is transmitted in AM while the audio is transmitted in FM. This can cause interference in your picture such as ghosting or snowing channels. Plus, the amount of bandwidth assigned to an analog channel is limited restricting the resolution and quality of picture.  Digital video is transmitted as data in a binary format where the video data is represented by a series of "1"s and "O"s. Because this signal is made up of "bits", the same bandwidth size that takes up a current analog TV signal, can accommodate not only a higher quality image in digital form, but also allows for additional video and audio in that same space. As a subscriber to Cox Digital Cable, all the channels you receive are broadcast in 100% digital quality. Meaning you have a clearer resolution and digital video and sound on every channel!

Where can I go to find out what is on TV?
If you are a Cox Digital Cable subscriber, using your Interactive Program Guide by selecting the "guide" button is the easiest way to scroll through channels to find out what is on. However, you may also visit the TV listings page on www.cox.net to see what's on.

    Subtitles / Closed Captioning

Can I save money installing services on my own?
Depending on the service you want to install on your own will depend on how much money you can save. We want our subscribers to have the best customer experience possible which is why we offer the self-install option. We understand that some of our customers enjoy installing new technology on their own. If you choose a self install for a Cox product or service, and for some reason get stuck, we'll need to send a Cox Home Service Technician to your home and you could incur an install cost.

How do I program my remote?
To program your Cox Remote to work with your entertainment equipment, please select the document to the right.

Sometimes my cable box will freeze up and reboot. Sometimes my DVR loses the shows I've recorded. How can I fix the problem?
DVR boxes resetting can be caused by multiple issues. Most of the time the box will reset because a signal issue exists going to the digital receiver – low quality, too strong or weak. Best thing to do in this case is to verify coaxial connections coming from the wall to the DVR/Digital box. Unplugging the power from the box for a few seconds and reconnecting can also provide a quick fix sometimes. If the issue persists, please call technical support.

I received a door hanger that says "We have detected radiation levels above normal coming from your home." It says I must call within 72 hours to schedule a service call. What does this mean and what should I do?
Please contact us so we can ensure the problem gets fixed so that your services will not be disconnected. This indicates there could be damage to the services within your home.

Please contact us so we can issue a new data only modem.

When I go from a digital channel to an HDTV channel, the volume drops so we turn it up. When we go back to a digital channel from an HD channel, the volume is blaring. How do I fix this?
If your using your television speakers then you can change the audio settings by selecting the menu button on your remote, audio settings and then select Audio: Range - Narrow. If you are using separate speakers for your audio then we suggest calling us so a representative can walk you through the steps.

My digital menu goes out fairly often, what causes this and can I rset my digital menu?
When your digital menu goes out, this could be a couple different things. It could be that the box is going through it's nightly update, usually around midnight or there could be a possible signal issue going to the box. Verify your coaxial connections and you can also reset your digital box by unplugging and plugging back in. If this does not resolve issue, please contact us so we can assess your equipment.

Why does my HDTV box lose data when other digital boxes in my house retain data?
If your HDTV box loses data, you might need a new HDTV receiver. Please contact us so we can assess the equipment.

Why does my TV set display a yellowish area that stays on the set regardless of which channel I'm on?
Any areas of one color or color streak on your TV screen could mean your television has an unwanted magnetic field. Check for a stereo speaker sitting too close to your TV and move it away. If it is not a speaker, your television may need to be serviced by a television technician.

How much money can I save by doing a self-install on my digital service?
On average, customer's can save up to $40 by installing services on their own. However, if you run into errors during your install, a service call can be scheduled to come out and install your services.
